June's Insights from Lisa

Happy June Friends!! June is a magical time where we celebrate the longest day of the year and revival in the height of the sun. Ancient peoples celebrated this time especially because much light and sunshine meant bountiful crops and good harvests to come. Helpful herbs would be popping up as they do today to ensure good health and longevity. Seeds would be sprouting, blossoms would be turning into fruit and live stock would be growing strong. There was tangible, nourishing support from mother earth. Life would still be challenging physically but it would have been more enjoyable, sociable and people would have felt much more energized as the earth seemed to overflow and brim with life. Today it is difficult for us to really understand what life would have been like for our ancestors but we still feel the great energy, growth and sense of well being that June brings. The cards this month offer us growth and support which helps us be in tune with the energy of late spring and early summer :)

#1. Support: This card asks us to be aware of the role support plays in our lives. We need to ask ourselves if we have a good support system in place for ourselves. This is a time to sort of re-evaluate the support systems we have currently. Do we allow people into our lives who bring good energy and growth to us? Do the people we choose to spend time with make us feel good about ourselves and who we are? When you are in need of support do you have people you can count on? Are the people you surround yourself with in alignment with your beliefs and values? Is the exchange of energy with your support system full of helpful energy or is it restricted? If you are not feeling like the exchange is helpful and nurturing on both ends then it is time to ask yourself why. Have you outgrown some connections in your life? If this is true it doesn't mean you don't care about them it simply means that you are evolving. The important thing is to accept that you are in a different place and that it is okay to grow and move into a place where there are other people who can support you differently. This isn't about tossing people out of our lives because they are no longer useful to us. It is about being more aware of the energy exchange between yourself and others, about the roles people play in our lives. This card reminds us that people come and go from our lives at different times for different reasons. Some learn from you and move on while you need to learn from others. It is a natural process but it can be difficult for many of us. It can be challenging when we realize that we are changing in new ways and this may cause some anxiety. There can be guilt associated with this kind of change and there may be an inclination to hold ourselves back. It is perfectly OK to make room for a new support system so please don't hold yourself back. You can still remain friends with those who are not on the same path BUT what you might need from that friendship, will change and that is okay too. The key is to allow that person the freedom to be who they are in their current journey. Maybe you become a different kind of support system for them. Maybe within your newness, you can become a new source of support for someone just as others have done for you. It is important to allow ourselves this growth. If you had remained friends with everyone you have ever met in your whole life it would be exhausting and you would have no time to meet new people. The friend who helped you learn how to french braid your hair still holds a special spot in your heart. You both have moved on from french braids, Seventeen magazine and making invisible ink with lemon juice but her value in your journey isn't any less because she isn't apart of your story today.

#2. 10 of Water: Serenity, Peace, Good Fortune and Well-Being -This joyful Buddha wants to fill your heart with peace and calm of knowing that you are enough. If you are feeling a bit icky and unsure about reviewing some of the support systems in your life, rest assured that the Buddha brings you new support worth celebrating. Feel into your growth with confidence and self assurance. Follow what your intuition calls you to do and yet again, do NOT over-think it. Trust yourself! The 10 of water tells us to be fluid and go with the flow. Nothing has to be written in stone. If you make a mistake you just jump back in the water and flow on down the stream. What you need IS inside of you. I know that sometimes this statement can be a bit crazy-making. You say: “Well ok, if what I need is already within me why don't I have the answers?? Why do I question myself? Why doesn't the universe open up the sky and hand me down a sequined bedazzled envelope with all the answers to my questions AND bonus answers for questions I will have in the future?? Why do I always get 'maybe' when I consult my Magic Eight Ball ??” I feel your frustration sister-friend. The 10 of cups wants us to believe in ourselves, our abilities and to trust in the lessons we have already learned. This is a card that wants us to embrace and celebrate the wins and the fact that many times we HAVE had the answers within us. We just had to trust in ourselves. Take pleasure in knowing great strides have been made in your personal growth and to be proud of yourselves. The Buddha wants us to stop being so hard on ourselves and take some credit where credit is due. Allow yourself to beam like Buddha! Lighten up on yourself and embrace your accomplishments big and small. This is a time to sit back and take pleasure in who have been become, forgive your mistakes and be OK with where you are right now. Celebrate where you have come from and how you got here. Take some time to sit and think about one or two times you realized you DID have what you needed inside you. Feel that connection to yourself and your intuitive abilities. You deserve it. Get out some ice cream and cream soda and celebrate how far you have truly come!

#3. The Message: Positive News Positive Outcome- If you are still unsure about being your own wellness Guru, this card is here with all the joy and sunshine of winning free housekeeping for a year (even those who like cleaning can appreciate the joy of this). The white dove in this card brings us good news and not just that you will find $20 on the floor in Costco. It is about bringing you positive messages and signs that you are on the right track. As in last month's reading, the colour yellow brings in support and healing to our solar plexus charka. It helps give us strength to stand in our power. It helps us speak our truth about what we need and why. It helps give us confidence when we set out to make changes in our lives. The Message card lets us know that when we make changes in our lives from a place of authenticity we are always moving in the right direction. The universe is sending us positivity from all directions. A kind of reward for all the work that has been done. All winter the universe asked us to get rid of what no longer serves us, to clear the emotional and mental clutter. When we clear the clutter it makes makes room for new and positive things to come into our lives. The universe is now helping us to fill that space with positive energy and people. Be open to new opportunities, synchronicities and interesting “coincidences” :)

#4. Grace: I like that we are finishing the reading with this card because the grace card brings us to a beautiful place of calm and a place of reflection. Not unlike the joyful Buddha this card asks us to be in the moment and to NOT allow the frustrating and annoying details of everyday life to be our constant source of life energy. We regularly need to allow ourselves to stop and be in the moment. It is never a bad idea to stop, regroup, take a look around you and just “be”. Take a deep breath, give yourself some credit for what ever you have accomplished so far that day. Allow the simplicity of that moment to fill your heart with peace and grace. The name Grace has Latin origins and means 'favour' or 'blessing'. Make time for quiet moments to allow yourself to count your blessings, give yourself some credit and to think about what you are grateful for. When you cultivate a daily practice of gratitude you invite grace to be a constant companion in your life, even on those days when you ask...“oh what fresh hell is this coming my way?”, you can centre yourself back to grace, gratitude and not get feverishly caught up in whatever 'fresh hell' is coming your way. You know you can handle whatever is in front of you because you have gratitude in your heart, you have a great support system in place and you believe in yourself.

Have a wonderful June friends and always remember, we are connected. Big Love, Lisa xo

An Empath's Guide to Evading Relationships that Drain You and Restoring Your Health and Power

Christiane Northrup, M.D.

Highly sensitive people—or empaths—see life through the eyes of compassion and caring. They were born that way. As a result, they carry a tremendous amount of inner light. But they’re also the favored prey of “vampires” who feed off empaths’ energy and disrupt their lives on every level—physical, emotional, and financial.

In Dodging Energy Vampires, Christiane Northrup, M.D., draws on the latest research in this exciting new field, along with stories from her global community and her own life, to explore the phenomenon of energy vampires and show us how we can spot them, dodge their tactics, and take back our own energy. You’ll delve into the dynamics of vampire-empath relationships and discover how vampires use others’ energy to fuel their own dysfunctional lives. Once you recognize the patterns of behavior that mark these relationships, you’ll be empowered to identify the vampires in your life too.

In these pages, Dr. Northrup opens up a toolbox full of techniques you can use to leave these harmful relationships behind; heal from the darkness they’ve cast over your mind, body, and spirit; and let your own light shine. In the end, you may find yourself healthier, happier, wealthier, and more vibrant than you ever believed possible.

These days it’s hard to count on the world outside. So it’s vital to grow strengths inside like grit, gratitude, and compassion—the key to resilience, and to lasting well-being in a changing world.

True resilience is much more than enduring terrible conditions. We need resilience every day to raise a family, work at a job, cope with stress, deal with health problems, navigate issues with others, heal from old pain, and simply keep on going.

With his trademark blend of neuroscience, mindfulness, and positive psychology, New York Times bestselling author Dr. Rick Hanson shows you how to develop twelve vital inner strengths hardwired into your own nervous system. Then, no matter what life throws at you, you’ll be able to feel less stressed, pursue opportunities with confidence, and stay calm and centered in the face of adversity.

This practical guide is full of concrete suggestions, experiential practices, personal examples, and insights into the brain. It includes effective ways to interact with others and to repair and deepen important relationships.

Warm, encouraging, and down-to-earth, Dr. Hanson’s step-by-step approach is grounded in the science of positive neuroplasticity. He explains how to overcome the brain’s negativity bias by releasing painful thoughts and feelings and replacing them with self-compassion, self-worth, joy, and inner peace.

We all know a lot less than we think we do. Humans have invented countless marvels, from jumbo jets to the global economy, yet most of us can't even explain how a toilet works. How have we achieved so much despite understanding so little?

The human mind is both brilliant and pathetic. We have mastered fire, created democratic institutions, stood on the moon, and sequenced our genome. And yet each of us is error prone, sometimes irrational, and often ignorant. The fundamentally communal nature of intelligence and knowledge explains why we often assume we know more than we really do, why political opinions and false beliefs are so hard to change, and why individual-oriented approaches to education and management frequently fail. But our collaborative minds also enable us to do amazing things. The Knowledge Illusion contends that true genius can be found in the ways we create intelligence using the community around us.

Cognitive scientists Steven Sloman and Philip Fernbach argue that we overestimate the depth of our comprehension and expertise in almost every realm. We thrive by instictively drawing on the knowledge of the people and things around us, but the illusion of individual intelligence persists. We believe we can understand complicated political or technical issues (we can't), cram endless information in our brains (we don't), and effectively make complex business decisions on our own (we won't). The Knowledge Illusion offers a better way to think about how we think. Appreciating the collaborative nature of the human mind can make us better teachers, managers, citizens, and contributing members of the community of knowledge.

Group Instinct and the Fate of Nations

Humans are tribal. We need to belong to groups. In many parts of the world, the group identities that matter most—the ones that people will kill and die for—are ethnic, religious, sectarian, or clan-based. But because America tends to see the world in terms of nation-states engaged in great ideological battles—Capitalism vs. Communism, Democracy vs. Authoritarianism, the “Free World” vs. the “Axis of Evil”—we are often spectacularly blind to the power of tribal politics. Time and again this blindness has undermined American foreign policy.

In the Vietnam War, viewing the conflict through Cold War blinders, we never saw that most of Vietnam’s “capitalists” were members of the hated Chinese minority. Every pro-free-market move we made helped turn the Vietnamese people against us. In Iraq, we were stunningly dismissive of the hatred between that country’s Sunnis and Shias. If we want to get our foreign policy right—so as to not be perpetually caught off guard and fighting unwinnable wars—the United States has to come to grips with political tribalism abroad.

In America today, every group feels threatened. There is a pervasive sense of collective persecution and discrimination. On the left, this has given rise to increasingly radical and exclusionary rhetoric of privilege and cultural appropriation. On the right, it has fueled a disturbing rise in xenophobia and white nationalism.

In her persuasive style, Amy Chu argues that America must rediscover a national identity that transcends our political tribes. It is time for a more difficult unity that acknowledges the reality of group differences and fights the deep inequities that divide us.

We all know what it's like to have a 'charge' about something; the feeling of excitement, fear, arousal, or irritation. How do we use that charge for the behaviours we want to create?

Charge is a word for the basic life force running through us. This force is crucial if we are to meet challenges, heal past wounds, and manage stress. Even more, it is essential for mastering your own life force and becoming all you can be.

Charge and The Energy Body makes an important contribution to the growing field of Energy Medicine, by looking at charge as the interface between mind and body, and the missing ingredient in Mind-Body healing. It brings the reader into a deep intimacy with their own life force, as well as an understanding of how charge runs their relationships, their children, their clients, and their patients. It examines how we can become 'overcharged' or 'undercharged' and how to create balance through practices of charging and discharging. Each chapter gives simple exercies to put these principles into practice.

World-renowned teacher, somatic therapist, author, and advanced yoga teacher, Anodea Judith, PhD addresses all this and more. Taken from her decades of teaching and her doctoral work in Mind-Body medicine, Charge and the Energy Body contributes something entirely new to the literature on healing self and others.

The Ultimate Guide to Clearing the Cords
That Are Constricting Your Life

Denise Linn

Native shamanic traditions tell us that there are cords, strands, threads, and filaments of energy that flow to and through us, connecting us to everyone and everything in the Universe. Some energy strands make us feel vibrant and alive. Others deplete and weaken us. Most of us are unaware of these energy strands, but they are extremely powerful forces that surround us every day.

In Energy Strands, Denise Linn shows you how to release the cords that bind you and strengthen the ones that heal you. She shares methods she's personally practiced over the years to help you achieve peace and balance in your life, including how to:

  • discover attachments to family, friends, lovers, past-lives, and pets
  • cut energy strands with toxic people and unhealthy relationships
  • activate specific techniques to protect and shield your energy field
  • use space clearing methods to create harmony in your home
Energy Strands explores the connection between the chakras, breath, meditation, visualization, sound healing, and more. Using a variety of tools, including dowsing, smudging, singing bowls, crystals, and much, much more, you'll begin to renew your energy, replenish your inner sources, and magnify the cords that empower you.

The practice of non-doing, non-forcing is an essential aspect of Taoism known as wu-wei. Attributed to the great sage Lao-tzu, the philosophy of wu-wei teaches you how to develop a natural state of consciousness not bound by thought or preconceived limitations. Experienced by the greatest artists, athletes, musicians, and writers, this heightened state of consciousness, referred to as “being in the zone,” is where intelligent spontaneity and effortless action flourish via a practice rooted in permitting the natural harmony of the cosmos to prevail.

Merging Taoist philosophy, Hindu principles, and Confucianism along with scientific findings, Jason Gregory outlines the practice of wu-wei as a vehicle to realize our innate freedom, revealing that when we release our ego and allow life to unfold as it will, we align ourselves more closely with our goals and cultivate skill and mastery along the way. Equating “being in the zone” with a stillness of the mind, Gregory shares meditation practices coupled with yoga exercises from Patanjali that allow you to approach life with a mastery of acceptance, releasing deluded beliefs of how to achieve success that make your mind “sticky” and poised for conflict. The author shows how practicing wu-wei paradoxically empowers you to accomplish all that you desire by having no intention to do so, as well as allowing you to become receptive to nature’s blueprint for expressing beauty.

Revealing wisdom utilized by renowned sages, artists, and athletes who have adapted “being in the zone” as a way of life, the author shows that wu-wei can yield a renewed sense of trust in many aspects of your daily life, making each day more effortless. As an avid wu-wei practitioner, he provides keen insight on how you, too, can experience the beauty of achieving an enlightened, effortless mind while reveling in the process of life’s unfolding.

Enchantment. By Dr. Sharon Blackie’s definition, a vivid sense of belongingness to a rich and many-layered world, a profound and whole-hearted participation in the adventure of life. Enchantment is a natural, spontaneous human tendency—one we possess as children, but lose, through social and cultural pressures, as we grow older. It is an attitude of mind which can be cultivated: the enchanted life is possible for anyone. It is intuitive, embraces wonder, and fully engages the mythic imagination—but it is also deeply embodied in ecology, grounded in place and community.

Taking as her starting point the inspiration and wisdom that can be derived from myth, fairy tales, and folk culture, Dr. Sharon Blackie offers a set of practical and grounded tools for enchanting our lives and the places we live, so leading to a greater sense of meaning and of belonging to the world. To live this way is to be challenged, to be awakened, to be gripped and shaken to the core by the extraordinary which lies at the heart of the ordinary.
